Sysco Food Services - Our History
Sysco Winnipeg officially made its presence in Canada in 2002. Here is a brief history of our company prior to 2002.
1926 - Sysco can trace its Canadian presence back to 1885 in Winnipeg; however, the essence of our present day company was founded in 1926, a result of the merging of the Scott Fruit Company, the National Fruit Company, and the P. Burns Company forming the Consolidated Fruit Company Ltd.
1965 - By 1965, the company’s operations were so diversified that the directors approved a name change to Scott National Company Ltd.
1993 - In 1993, Scott National made two acquisitions, purchasing the Foodservice Division of Overwaitea (A.G. Foodservice) in Calgary and the Foodservice Division of Maple Leaf Foods in Western Canada, including Winnipeg. These acquisitions made Scott National the largest Foodservice Distributor in Canada.
1994 - In 1994, The Oshawa Group purchased the Argcen Group and announced that all of Oshawa’s numerous foodservice operations would operate under the new corporate identity, SERCA Foodservice Inc. SERCA in Winnipeg included associates from the former Scott National and Maple Leaf Foods.
1997 - In 1997,SERCA completed the consolidation of a national company with the purchase of Neptune Food Supplies in Vancouver (July 1996), and Scott National (February 1997), becoming Canada’s largest broadline foodservice distributor.
1998 - In 1998, Sobeys Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Empire Company Ltd., purchased The Oshawa Group, which included SERCA Food Services Inc.
2002 - In 2002, Sysco Corporation of Houston purchased SERCA Foodservices Inc. from Sobeys Inc.
2003 - In 2003, Sysco decentralized and Sysco West was formed, encompassing all Western Operating Companies. The Winnipeg operation was renamed Sysco Food Services of Winnipeg. Decentralization was completed in 2005.
